Sand & Soul BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU Club

Prof. Richard Raciti 5TH Degree Black Belt

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grapplingground fighting, and submission holds. BJJ focuses on taking an opponent down to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

The Sand & Soul Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is under the instruction of Professor Richard Raciti, a 5TH Degree Black Belt under BJJ Legend and Coral Belt, Master Joe Moreira. The academy follows the principles of Prof. Moreira as they have been passed down to Prof. Richard Raciti.

BJJ revolves around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the ground and using a number of holds and submissions to defeat them. BJJ training differs from academy to academy. Some schools emphasize competition and training for the "Rules" over training for the competition. The Sand & Soul BJJ Club takes a more practical approach and teaches what is commonly referred to as "Old School" BJJ where the emphasis is more dedicated to real self-defense situations. "Rolling" or live ground sparring and drilling plays a major role in training and the practitioner's development. BJJ is also a phenomenal method of promoting physical fitness, building character, and as a way of life.

At Sand & Soul we do allow "Drop-Ins" from other academies or schools unless they are in the Joe Moreira Association.

This discipline is known as the "Art of eight limbs", as it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins.
